The following is a
list of owners of property in Bedehouse Bank. The numbers in the first column
are those of the plots in the corresponding plan. The heading indicates that the Marquis of Exeter’s Estate
contested these claims to ownership but appears to have accepted them de facto. The award mentioned will have
been that of 1770, when the enclosure awards resulting from the 1766 Bourne
Enclosure Act were made. There was a second Bourne Enclosure Act in 1772. This
dealt with the South Fen which had not been included in the earlier one. That
award was made in 1777. Although adjoining it, Bedehouse Bank was not part of
the South Fen.
Though it was only a
year or two earlier, the Bourne
Abbots Estate Map does not show most of these properties. There, Bedehouse
Bank is not named and the bulk of its site is shown as two plots allotted to
the Marquess of Exeter. According to the Bourne Abbots map, together, the plots
occupy 4 acres and 3 roods as opposed to 4 acres, 3 roods and 24 perches noted
here. This is despite the fact that the present list excludes a little of the
area included in the Bourne Abbots map.
