Figure 2. Figure 1. A pisé wall at Lyons la Forêt in Normandy. Its lime plaster facing has gone and the layers in which it was rammed into place between boards are visible, as are the pieces of the chalk which have provided its binding calcium carbonate matrix. See Figure 1.
